What are the common fertility tests before starting IVF?
Required fertility tests for starting IVF
Before starting IVF treatment, patients undergo several diagnostic tests to assess their fertility. These tests help doctors determine the most effective treatment protocol.
Female Testing
Blood hormone panel measuring FSH, LH, estradiol, and AMH to assess ovarian function and reserve
Transvaginal ultrasound to examine ovarian follicles, uterine lining, and identify potential abnormalities
Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) to check fallopian tube patency and uterine cavity shape
Endometrial biopsy if indicated to evaluate uterine lining health
Male Testing
Comprehensive semen analysis examining sperm count, motility, morphology, and volume
Sperm DNA fragmentation testing when indicated
Blood tests to check hormone levels including testosterone
Additional Screening
Some extra tests may be helpful depending on your health history:
Infectious disease testing for both partners (HIV, hepatitis, etc.)
Genetic carrier screening to identify inherited disorder risks
Thyroid function tests
Complete blood count and metabolic panel
Most clinics require these evaluations within 6-12 months before starting IVF. Results guide important decisions about medication protocols, whether additional procedures like ICSI may be needed, and help set realistic expectations for treatment outcomes.
